Atlantic County Information

Atlantic County is a county located in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2000 Census, the population is 252,552. Its county seat is Mays Landing.

This county is part of the Delaware Valley area and is known for it's casinos, beaches and resorts.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 671 square miles, of which, 561 square miles is land and 110 square miles is water. Much of Atlantic County is low-lying and flat. The highest elevation, approximately 150 feet above sea level, is found at two areas next to the NJ Transit passenger rail line just east of Hammonton. Sea level is the lowest point.

All of what is known today as Atlantic County was once called Egg Harbor Township, the eastern half of the original County of Gloucester. Named as an official district as early as 1693, it was bounded on the north by the Little Egg Harbor River (now known as the Mullica River), and on the south by the Great Egg Harbor River and its southern branch the Tuckahoe River. Its eastern boundary was the Atlantic Ocean, but the western boundary in the South Jersey interior was not fixed until 1761.

Atlantic County's principal industries are Casino hotels, fine china production, aviation testing/ engineering, agriculture, yacht building, glass, plastics, pharmaceutical research and promotion, and tourism related services.

Institutions of higher education in Atlantic County include Atlantic Cape Community College and Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, in Pomona.

The Atlantic County Park System reflects its ongoing commitment to the preservation of open space and the provision of ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. The Atlantic County Park System offers a wide variety of recreational and leisure pursuits. Park programs include large group events, crafts, environmental education, and children's programs.

In 1990, voters demonstrated their support for the county park system by approving a special tax to be used exclusively for acquiring open space, recreational land, and historic sites. At present, Atlantic County has thirteen parks, mostly acquired through New Jersey State Green Acres funding.

These thirteen parks and facilities are: Oscar E. McClinton Jr. Waterfront Park in Atlantic City, Estell Manor, Lake Lenape, Weymouth Furnace, Penny Pot, Gaskill, Riverbend, Whirlpool Island, Galloway Tract, Leeds' Point and Veterans Memorial Park. The County Park System also maintains three facilities- Klingener Pier, John F. Gaffney Green Tree Golf Course, and Camp Acagisca and the Atlantic County Bikeway. There also many other parks in Atlantic County that are not run by the county government.

Because Atlantic County is one of the most diverse counties in the state, each park in the county is unique and has something different to offer.

The county's major highways include: the Garden State Parkway; Atlantic City Expressway; U.S. Routes 9, 30, 40, 206, 322; State Routes 49, 50, 52, 54, 87, 152.

Passenger rail service includes: Amtrak (Atlantic City to Philadelphia) and NJ Transit (Atlantic City, Absecon, Egg Harbor City, Hammonton,Atco, Lindenwold, Philadelphia). Atlantic City International Airport (Pomona) Bader Field Airport (Atlantic City) and Hammonton Municipal Airport all serve the Atlantic County area.
