Cumberland County Information


Cumberland County is a county located in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2000 Census, the population is 146,438. Its county seat is Bridgeton. It is part of the Vineland-Millville-Bridgeton Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses the New Jersey cities of Vineland, Millville and Bridgeton and all of Cumberland County for statistical purposes. Cumberland County is named for Prince William, Duke of Cumberland. This county is part of the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area area.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 677 square miles, of which, 489 square miles of it is land and 187 square miles (27.68%) is water.

Twice voted one of the "best places to live in New Jersey" by Money Magazine, Cumberland County can offer affordable housing, an economical business location to excellent highways and rail service, a competitive regulatory climate, and an abundance of beautiful natural resources, unspoiled towns and villages, and picturesque scenery.

Located in the heart of the Northeast corridor, Cumberland County is situated along the Delaware Bay and conveniently located two hours from New York City and Baltimore and forty five minutes from Philadelphia and Atlantic City. Cumberland County was founded in January 1748 and occupies over 500 square miles of land in the south central part of New Jersey and has over 40 miles of Delaware Bay coastline. It is comprised of 3 Cities, 10 Municipalities and 1 Borough.

Cumberland County’s economy was developed around four principal industries, glass making, food processing, textiles and maritime trades. As early as the 19th century, NJ was one of the 4 leading oyster producing States in the Nation. Port Norris became known as the “Oyster Capital of the World”. It was said that there were more millionaires per square mile in the Port Norris area than anywhere else in the Nation. By the late 1800’s there were over 300 oyster boats operating on the Delaware Bay employing approximately 1500 people. The Glass industry also had a significant presence in all three cities until the 1970’s. Today, Cumberland County enjoys a strong agricultural base with targeted industry sectors that include Health Care, Construction, Hospitality/Tourism and Advanced Manufacturing.

Cumberland County is easily accessible by highway using such major routes as the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, Routes 55 and 322, and I-295. It is also easily accessed by Millville Airport, the only FAA Flight Service Station in New Jersey.
